A pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera works by moving the camera in different directions to get a whole picture of the surveillance area, and zooming in for further detail of security events. The pan, tilt and zoom capabilities make it possible to monitor large areas with a single camera while getting great detail at the same time — especially when combined with fixed cameras that cover entrances and exits.

PTZ movements can be controlled manually using monitoring software or a joystick, or set up automatically using camera management software. You can also configure guard tours, where the camera automatically moves to pre-set locations on a schedule. Some cameras can auto-track movement, following a person or car moving in its field of view.

Digital video recorders are security camera recorders that accept multiple types of input camera signal.
